Day 6, from Independence to Dyersville, was a relatively easy day with only 42.5 miles to ride. Good thing too, because we stumbled upon one of the more memorable attractions of the week.
Thanks to our exceptionally sharp eyes (or maybe just a crowd gathered around a a small animal), we discovered what is claimed to be Iowa’s smallest cow.
Meet Lainey. Standing less than 2½ feet tall and weighing only 12 pounds at birth.
Following are real questions I heard during the stop.
Q: How did you get Lainey to be so small?
Farmer: “Well… I just stopped feeding ’em!”
Q: How do you know she’s the smallest cow in Iowa?
Farmer: “Well… no one’s disputed it yet.”
Q: Do you milk Lainey?
Farmer: Nah I don’t have a stool small enough.
Q: Are you sure it is not a goat?
Farmer: ughhhhh
These answers fit perfectly with the humor and charm you find in Iowa’s small towns. Sometimes the best stops on RAGBRAI aren’t planned—they’re just waiting along the side of the road.
